Class Notes - Mise En Scene
Produce definitions/examples/analysis for the following: (a few obvious ones will be definition only)
PRODUCTION DESIGN
Production Design creates the mood, atmosphere and context of a film through the expressive use of space, objects, forms and colour. The Production Designer interprets the written word for the screen, bringing all the visual elements together to create a story world.
LOCATION/SETTING
The place or type of surroundings where something is positioned or where an event takes place.
A film studio is a major entertainment company or motion picture company that has its own privately owned studio facility or facilities that are used to make films, which is handled by the production company.
Set design refers to the creation of the background and surroundings of a set in the production. This requires the creation of different sets and the arrangement of them to create a different scene. This example is taken from "Mrs Brown".
Costume design is the envisioning of clothing and the overall appearance of a character or performer. Costume may refer to the style of dress particular to a nation, a class, or a period.
This example is taken from "Downton Abbey".

PROPERTIES (PROPS)
This is an object used on stage or on screen by actors during a performance or screen production. In practical terms, a prop is considered to be anything movable or portable on a stage or a set, distinct from the actors, scenery, costumes, and electrical equipment.
LIGHTING
-AVAILABLE
Light of almost any sort which exists and has not been introduced to record images. Its use is sometimes fast, cheap, and even beautiful. This light is usually natural lighting.
-KEY
The key may determine the character of the lighting, but often a strong Back Light for example, sets the Mood. The key should usually be Motivated by a source like the sun or a window.

-FILL
Fill is used to lighten shadows and control Contrast and Lighting Ratios. This lighting style is softing the hard edges of the key and balancing the light.
-BACK
This is the process in which the subject of the scene is illuminated from the back. This creates a glowing effect on the edges of the subject and this light can either be artificial or natural.
-SET
The term some Lighting Directors use to refer to Background Light, and others may use instead of "Base Light." Obviously, part of a vast conspiracy to confound beginners.
-PRACTITCAL
A prop light seen in the shot which can be operated by the talent; sometimes doctored to control brightness, color, or coverage.
